I made my decisions without regard to President Trump's political association, activities, beliefs,

00:09

or candidacy in the 2024 election.

00:14

President Trump was charged because the evidence established that he willfully broke the law.

00:19

The very laws he took an oath to uphold.

00:23

Grangeries in two separate districts, which this conclusion based on his actions, as alleged

00:29

in the indictments they returned.

00:31

Rather than accept his defeat in the 2020 election, President Trump engaged in a criminal

00:36

scheme to overturn the results and prevent the lawful transfer of power.

00:42

After leaving office in January of 21, President Trump illegally kept classified documents

00:48

at his Mara Logo Social Club and repeatedly tried to obstruct justice to conceal his continued

00:54

retention of those documents.

00:57

Highly sensitive, national security information was held in a ballroom and a bathroom.

01:04

As I testified before the committee today, I want to be clear.

01:07

I stand by my decisions as special counsel, including the decision to bring charges

01:13

against President Trump.

01:16

Our investigation developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged

01:21

in criminal activity.

01:23

If asked whether to prosecute a former president based on the same facts today, I would

01:29

do so regardless of whether that president was a Democrat or a Republican.

01:35

No one should be above the law in this country and the law required that he be held to account.

01:42

So that is what I did to have done otherwise on the facts of these cases would have

01:48

meant to shirt my duties as a prosecutor and as a public servant of which I had no intention

01:55

of doing.

01:56

My fear is that we have seen the rule of law functioning in our country for so long that

02:03

many of us have come to take it for granted.

02:08

The rule of law is not self-executing.

02:11

It depends on our collective commitment to apply it.

02:15

It requires dedicated service on behalf of others, especially when that service is difficult

02:23

and comes with costs.

02:25

Our willingness to pay those costs is what tests and defines our commitment to the rule of

02:30

law and to this wonderful country.

02:34

What do you think about the attack on the Department of Justice and the special counsel

02:38

for doing your jobs?

02:40

I think the attack is unjustified.

02:43

I think that people who work with me as career public servants are people.

02:48

They are part of the reason I have been a prosecutor for so long as to work with people like

02:51

that, not just the prosecutors in my office, but also the agents, FBI agents who are

02:59

heroes who have served their country not only as agents but also overseas.

03:06

I think those attacks are unwarranted based on the facts and I think that they have no

03:14

basis in who we are as Americans as a country.

03:18

I don't see attacking people like that as anything appropriate.
